Queen are to re-form for an album eight years after the death of flamboyant frontman Freddie Mercury from Aids, it emerged today.

Drummer Roger Taylor told the Express that guitarist Brian May and "hopefully" bass player John Deacon would be back in the studio later this year - though still minus a lead singer.

"The good news is that I spoke to Brian May last week and he suggested we book a studio, write a song and see what happens. I haven't spoken to John in ages but Brian and I are hopeful he will do it," said Taylor.

He refused to be drawn on whether the supergroup would audition for a new vocalist or whether a name was already in the frame.

Rumours circulating in the music industry suggest that George Michael, who once stood in for his late friend on the Queen classic Somebody to Love, has expressed an interest.

But Taylor said: "The plan for a lead singer is to write the song first and then find the best voice for it. That's how we'll probably go about it. We might do the same on the other songs.

"A lot of singers have expressed an interest in working with Queen. We're not thinking of anyone taking Freddie's place permanently. I think this is just the right time to get together again.

"The three of us went through a difficult period after Freddie died. It took a lot of time to get over it and there were horrible expectations about what we do next. Now we're getting on with life. We are more relaxed."

The group has not released any original Queen material since 1995's Made in Heaven album of tracks Mercury had been working on up until his death.
